Taken
from The Buffalo News on Tuesday October 14, 1997 ( Click Here for image of actual article ) William T. Dean, a senior honor student at Williamsville South High School who ran the school's Web page in the computer laboratory, died Monday (Oct. 13, 1997) in his Willamsville home. William, 17, was a member of the National Honor Society and was known for strong skills and interest in language, computers and math. He lived in the area for the past 5 years. A member of the Williamsville South swim team, he also participated in many school activities, including the chess, computer, and Latin clubs. William who played the piano, was planning a career as an English teacher or a computer programmer. Born in Johnson City, he served as an altar boy at St. James Catholic Church there before coming to the Buffalo area. "He was one of his parents' four diamonds and is now a star," his mother Elaine T. Loughran of Williamsville, said. William managed the school's Web page and spent free periods in the computer lab helping teachers setup e-mail accounts and assisting other students, said William R. Pickreign, Williamsville South principal. "He was one of our aces down there," Pickreign said. "He was a real asset to everyone who used that lab." Besides his mother, William is survived by a brother, Robert; two sisters, Patricia and Kaitlin; his father, Dr. Gary D. Dean of Johnson City; his grandparents, Vincent J. Loughran of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Dr. Robert J. and Aileen Dean, formally of Williamsville, now of Kinston, N.C. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Thursday Oct. 16 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Amherst. He was then laid to rest in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetary in Williamsville. |
Links to sites regarding suicide
If you are at all
thinking about suicide, DON'T!!! It's not the easy way out,
we all have problems and sure, life does suck at times but why
end your life? Sure it may end all of your problems
but think about your family and friends. Your ending
your own problems but causing alot more to the people who are
your family and friends. There is always someone willing to
help and just listen if that's what you need. Nobody ever
wants to lose a friend and just say "why" and
"what if..." or "if only I.."
Bill was known by many of us as White Wizard on local BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems). He also was planning on putting up his own BBS at Williamsville South called "The Lighthouse 2" which was previously run by Paul Mischler (Big Boy). He ran into problems with getting the modem to work which delayed it being put up. The funeral was attended by several other people that knew him from local BBSes and the Internet. It was attended by Keith (Bucky), Terry (Nemesis), Brian (Beren Calmost/Bri Guy), Mike (Great One), Dave (Dizzy) and brother Mark (Stealth), Jeremy (Fade..), Gabby, Matt (Octavian), and Scott (Spell Jammer). This was odd for some of us because we have known Bill for quite some time by chatting with him through message board discussions on a local BBS, to chatting with him on BBSes and also chatting with him on an almost daily basis on IRC and yet, we never got to meet face to face. We would often talk about computers and work. I work for a company that does computer tech support for Sony Computers and speak with people every day on the phone helping them with there computers and Bill dealt with freshman turning off his web server every day and asking just plain out stupid questions. We would often chat about computers and working with the less "knowledgable" who used them. Bill spoke often of wanting to attend Cornell University to start a career in either teaching or computer programming. He would also complain often about his slow Macintosh he used. Bill was a "virtual best friend" to all of us that knew him over the phone lines and we will miss him forever.
